A region that tastes of wine
The Mainschleife lives up to its name. The Main winds here in a large loop through the landscape, past vineyards, small villages and historic towns. Volkach lies right in the middle.

Volkach: The wine heart of the Mainschleife
Volkach is a quintessential Franconian wine town. The market square with its half-timbered houses, the parish church of St. Bartholomew, and the surrounding vineyards.
Particularly worth seeing: the Mainschleife Vinothek on the market square. Here you can taste wines from 30 winemakers in the region.
Maria in the Vineyard
Two kilometres outside stands one of Franconia's most beautiful churches. The highlight is the Madonna of the Rosary by Tilman Riemenschneider from 1521.

On the Main: Raft trips and canoeing
Raft trips depart from various piers. Two hours on the water while the wine flows. For something more active, try canoeing.
Historic sites nearby
Sommerach: A winegrowers' village with many seasonal wine taverns.
Astheim: Former Carthusian monastery Mariaebrück.
Dettelbach: Best-preserved wine town with an intact city wall.
Cycling through the vineyards
The Main Cycle Path runs right by. A nice route: from Volkach to Nordheim, take the ferry across the Main, then continue to Sommerach. About 25 kilometres, flat.
Events
The Franconian Wine Festival in August is the region's largest. Also: vineyard hikes, open-air concerts, and the Volkach Winter Magic.
