A Romantic Weekend at the Mainschleife
Vineyards, river landscapes, sunsets over the Escherndorfer Lump: the Mainschleife near Volkach is made for a weekend for two.
The Mainschleife near Volkach is one of those places that work without a packed itinerary. Vineyards on both sides of the Main, small villages, ferries crossing the river. If you're looking for a weekend for two, this is it.
Friday: Arrival
Arrive, check in, unwind. If you get there early enough, take a stroll through Volkach's old town. The market square with the Renaissance town hall from 1544 is a good starting point. In the evening, enjoy Franconian cuisine at Restaurant 1917 with wines from the estate's own vineyard.
Saturday: Vineyards and Viewpoints
In the morning, walk or cycle to the pilgrimage church Maria im Weingarten. The path leads through vineyards, and from the top you get one of the best views over the Mainschleife. The Riemenschneider Madonna from the 16th century alone makes the climb worthwhile.
In the afternoon, take a boat trip on the MS Undine from the Volkach Main pier. About 90 minutes along the vineyards, with food and drinks on board. Trips run from early April to early November, 17 euros per person.
Or try a horse-drawn wagon ride through the vineyards of the Weininsel. The operator Erlebnisfahrten Mainschleife runs from May to mid-October, Saturdays at 10:30 am, 1:30 pm and 4:30 pm. Includes a welcome Secco and wine tasting along the way.
For sunset: the Terroir-f viewing platform above the Escherndorfer Lump. A staircase leads up, and the view stretches across the entire Mainschleife. Or the panorama platform at Nordheimer Kreuzberg, the highest point of the Weininsel with a 360-degree panoramic view.
Sunday: Wine and Wellness
Sleep in. Then a wine tasting at the WeinSensorikum at Weingut Römmert. The interactive experience makes wine tangible with all five senses. Wednesdays and Saturdays at 4:30 pm, 18 euros per person.
Or drive to Sommerach (6 km). The WeinReich at Winzer Sommerach has a wine shop with a sun terrace and a self-guided wine walk through the vineyards. The InfoVinothek in the village brings 20 wineries together under one roof.
Spend the rest of the day in the wellness area. Pool with vineyard views, sauna landscape, rooftop terrace.
Best Time to Visit
May and June: vineyards in fresh green, mild temperatures, long evenings. September and October: harvest season, golden light, autumn colours in the vineyards. In August, the Franconian Wine Festival takes place — Franconia's largest wine festival since 1949, spanning four days with 120 wines.
