Silvaner from Franconia: Why the region's flagship grape is so special
21 percent of Franconia's vineyard area is planted with Silvaner. Nowhere else is this grape variety grown at such a high level. What distinguishes Franconian Silvaner.
Silvaner: The soul of Franconia in a glass
When you say Franconia, you mean Silvaner. With 21 percent of the vineyard area, no other variety is as present in the region. There are good reasons for this: the shell limestone soil of the Mainschleife and the mild climate give Silvaner exactly what it needs.
Weingut Römmert has been growing Silvaner since 1917. The vines stand on the slopes above Volkach, where they soak up sun from morning to night.
What makes Franconian Silvaner special?
Silvaner is not a loud wine. It does not force itself on you but invites careful tasting. Typical are aromas of green apple, pear and a touch of minerality. The shell limestone provides that earthy note you won't find in any other region.
The thick skin of the Silvaner grape makes it robust against heat and drought. While other grape varieties suffer from climate change, Silvaner remains surprisingly composed.
Silvaner and food: A Franconian love story
In Franconia there is only one choice for asparagus: Silvaner. Its delicate acidity and subtle body give the king of vegetables the lead. But a chilled Silvaner also pairs well with river fish from the Main, goat cheese or a simple snack with house-made sausage.
At the Restaurant 1917 Franconian dishes are served that pair perfectly with Silvaner. Tip: don't serve Silvaner ice-cold, but at 10 to 12 degrees. This is how the aromas develop best.
Silvaner from Weingut Römmert
Weingut Römmert vinifies Silvaner dry and gives it time in stainless steel tanks. The result is a wine that tastes of its origin: honest, clear and full of character.
At a wine tasting in the vinothek you can compare different vintages. You will be surprised how differently Silvaner can taste, depending on site and winemaking.
Silvaner: More than a trend
After decades in which fruitier wines were popular, we are currently seeing a return to fuller, texture-rich white wines. Silvaner benefits from this. Its natural fullness and fine phenolic character make it the perfect companion for a new generation of wine drinkers.
In Franconia Silvaner has always played the leading role. That will still be the case in 50 or 100 years.
