From a short vineyard stroll to an all-day ferry hike: the Mainschleife near Volkach offers over a dozen signposted trails. Here are five of the best.

The Volkacher Mainschleife is one of the most scenic hiking areas in Franconia. Seventeen signposted themed trails wind through vineyards, along the Main and up to viewpoints high above the river loop. We have selected five routes that can easily be started from Volkach.

Panoramaweg: The Easy Start (3 km)

Short on time? Start with the Panoramaweg. This 3-kilometre route leads from the Mainschleifenbahn terminus in Astheim up to the Vogelsburg. The path is mostly paved and offers one of the finest views over the Mainschleife and the Weininsel. At the top, the Vogelsburg restaurant awaits.

Dschungelpfad: For the Adventurous (8.5 km)

The Dschungelpfad is the opposite of the comfortable Panoramaweg. From Astheim it follows natural paths right along the Main, then climbs through vineyards. Sure-footedness is essential: expect roots, steps and slippery sections when wet. Pack sturdy hiking boots. Along the way you pass the pilgrimage church Maria im Weingarten and reach the Vogelsburg. Allow 2.5 to 3 hours.

Weininsel Walk: Nordheim and Sommerach (10 km)

The Weininsel is the area enclosed by the Main and the Main Canal, home to the wine villages of Nordheim and Sommerach. The circular route follows paved paths through the vineyards between both villages. From the observation tower on the Katzenkopf you have an unobstructed view across the entire area. The tour is easy and takes 2.5 to 3 hours.

Fährenwanderweg: Both Banks of the Main (17.6 km)

The Fährenwanderweg connects both banks of the Main via the historic river ferries. These floating bridges allow you to switch sides and shorten the route if needed. Along the way there are six rest stops, including the giant Bocksbeutel sculpture on the Stammheimer Eselsberg. The full 17.6 kilometres make for a full-day hike.

Terroir-f Tour: Wine and Geology

The Terroir-f viewpoints mark special locations in Franconian wine country. The one near Volkach sits high above the Escherndorfer Lump, one of the most renowned vineyards in Franconia. From there the trail descends via the Vogelsburg steps to Escherndorf. Information panels explain the connection between geology, climate and wine. About 2 to 3 hours walking time.

Good to Know

The Volkach tourist office offers an experience map at 1:20,000 scale with elevation profiles and kilometre markers for all 17 trails. Available on site or as a download at volkach.de.

After your hike, stop by the wine estate's Vinothek. And if you would rather not drive after a day in the vineyards, our rooms are just minutes from most trailheads.
