The Mainschleife offers more wine tasting options than you have free evenings. An overview of wineries, wine bars and special formats in and around Volkach.

The Mainschleife near Volkach is one of Franconia's most important wine-growing regions. Around a quarter of all Franconian vineyards are located here. Silvaner is the signature grape variety, the Bocksbeutel the iconic bottle. If you want to taste wine, you're spoilt for choice.

At the Hotel: The WeinSensorikum

The WeinSensorikum at Weingut Römmert is an interactive experience that engages all five senses. One station plays different music over two identical wines. The wine genuinely tastes different. Add to that a colourfully lit cellar with concrete tanks and Georgian amphorae.

Guided tours on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 4:30 pm, 18 euros per person including Secco and four wines. On Mondays there are vertical tastings with single-vineyard and reserve wines, on Fridays a crime-themed wine tasting (7 wines, 7 characters, 25 euros). If you drop by spontaneously: the Probiererle tasting at the bar starts at 6 euros, no reservation needed.

In Volkach

Weingut Max Müller I (Hauptstraße 46): A VDP winery in the heart of the old town. Present at the Volkach wine festival with their own tent for over 70 years. Focus on Silvaner from the Volkacher Ratsherr and Escherndorfer Lump vineyards. Wine shop with tastings.

GWF MainschleifenVinothek (Sommeracher Str. 25): The Winzergemeinschaft Franken unites over 2,200 vintners. The wine shop in Volkach offers a wide selection of regional wines and individual tastings.

In Escherndorf

Three kilometres from Volkach lies Escherndorf, home to the famous Escherndorfer Lump vineyard. The 25-hectare steep slope with gradients of up to 70 degrees on 230-million-year-old shell limestone is one of Franconia's most renowned vineyard sites. Even Goethe ordered wine from here.

Weingut Horst Sauer (Bocksbeutelstraße 14): One of Franconia's finest wineries and a VDP member. Wine tastings for groups of up to 28 by appointment. Sales Mon-Fri 9 am-12 pm and 1-6 pm, Sat 11 am-5 pm.

Weingut Rainer Sauer (Bocksbeutelstr. 15): A VDP winery practising biodynamic viticulture. Wine tasting with cellar tour and Franconian tapas, 69 euros per person.

On the Wine Island: Sommerach and Nordheim

Winzer Sommerach: Franconia's oldest wine cooperative. The WeinReich at the foot of the Katzenkopf hill features a wine shop, the Sommerbar with sun terrace, and the Weinbummel to go — a self-guided walk through the vineyards.

InfoVinothek Sommerach: 20 family-run wineries under one roof. Tastings and purchases, ten different guided tours from 10 persons.

Nordheim am Main: Franconia's largest wine-growing municipality with over 450 hectares of vineyards. Known for its Heckenwirtschaften, where vintners seasonally serve their own wines alongside simple dishes.

Special Formats

Hay wagon ride: Erlebnisfahrten Mainschleife takes you across the wine island by tractor and hay wagon. Includes Secco, wine tasting and food. May to mid-October, Saturdays with several departures. Advance booking at 0176/47744752.

Wine hike through the Escherndorfer Lump: A guided gourmet walk with three wines tasted right in the vineyard, 14 euros per person. Bookable via volkach.de.

If you'd rather not drive after the tasting: our rooms are nearby. And the next morning, breakfast awaits at Restaurant 1917.
